In light of the fight against plastic pollution, as highlighted in past weeks by Sir David Attenborough, it has been reported by the Guardian that a new $180bn wave of investment by fossil fuel companies has been aimed at funding future plastic manufacturing, effectively increasing plastic production by 40%.

In recent months, scientists have described plastic pollution as a potential rival to climate change in terms of its severity as a global problem.  The systemic nature of the crisis is such that, in recent scientific studies, plastic particles were found in a range of consumer productions throughout the world: from beer and sea salt to tap water.

This latest colossal investment would seem to be supporting both the wrong message and trend in industry.
