Acer Laptops and Desktops – Review by The Good Shopping Guide | Mar 31, 2017 | Ethical Shopping Blog | 0 comments Acer offers a wide range of products. From notebooks, desktops and tablets to smartphones and monitors. In this review, we’ll be focusing on the brand’s range of desktops and laptops. Acer Laptops and Desktops – A General Consensus Acer is a tricky brand to come to grips with in terms of a general product review. The brand is popular and continues to standout for its value. But, as any knowledgeable consumer is aware, value does not necessarily equate ingenuity, quality or top design. With Acer, this seems to be generally the case as one samples a mix of everything across the brand’s diverse range of desktops and laptops. In Laptop Mag, run by the widely celebrated, notable and reliable Tom’s Guide, Acer is ranked as a mixture of the best and the worst. Most products reviewed were “good, but not great”. And that is the general sense that we’ve also arrived at. Inasmuch that, in 2016, Acer “rose from last place to eighth” in Laptop Mag, the reason for this rise was cited as “mostly because of its competitors’ weaknesses rather than Acer’s strength”. So what is the main site of concern? As Laptop editors conclude, “the brand continues to be held back by a combination of ho-hum systems, poor support and bland design”. Over at CNET, the general consensus is virtually the same. Some of Acer’s products score relatively well, especially its more high-end line of desktops and laptops, such as the Predator G6, priced at $1999.99 according to Amazon Marketplace. On ConsumerAffairs.com, the brand has so far received a total of 963 reviews, with an average 2 out of 5 stars. As for views expressed at Consumer Shopper, the pattern and trend shares a similar consensus. Likewise, DigitalTrends currently ranks a range of Acer products as a mix between 3 and 4 stars. Meanwhile, TrustedReviews has given Acer a range of scores between 2 and 4.5 out of 5. And finally, over at Expert Reviews Acer laptops receives a number of 5 star reviews, although we couldn’t find much on their desktops. Over the years, we’ve had a chance to review a number of Acer products. Inconstancy in quality is perhaps the one thing that stands out the most. Price Comparison As with every tech brand, the prices vary. Acer is generally considered a value brand, whose products are affordable within a modest budget. But it really depends on the product line. For instance, Acer has been known to dominate the low-end market with incredibly inexpensive Chromebooks, while the price bracket for other product lines could be considered as mid to high. Ethical Comparison Research How does Acer stack-up in terms of overall ethical rating? Does its Ethical Company Index reflect the brands underlining commitments? How does this compare to the brand’s overall quality? Perhaps to the surprise of some, Acer currently ranks top in the PC, Laptop and Tablet section of The Good Shopping Guide with an incredible 96 ECI. The brand ranked very high across the board in comprehensive research, including an impressive environmental, animal welfare and human rights record. In a time of corporate green washing and all the rest, Acer’s corporate social policy initiatives seem honest. The company’s aims, profile and approach regarding sustainable development, responsible policy and governance, as well as responsible standards of business conduct correlate with our comprehensive independent research and brand rankings. For a massive mainstream tech company, Acer is currently an ethical leader and this needs to highlighted, emphasized, and also celebrated. Overall Rating Having said all that, with an average product review score of 70, we cannot suppress the fact that there are notable concerns on a consumer level. And when weighing up both sides of the equation, it is disappointing that a popular and mainstream brand with such a high ethical ranking is somewhat marred by the notable inconsistencies in product quality. As for overall score: when we combine combine Acer’s excellent overall ethical rating with its average consumer ranking, the brand receives a respectable overall product review score of 83. Perhaps moving forward the company will take this review to heart, and see the positive possibility that with better overall product quality Acer could be a leading ethical alternative within the mainstream technology market, a label no large mainstream tech brand has truly embraced. In the meantime, we recommend that you thoroughly research the particular product, by model number, you are considering to purchase (as product quality ranges). * To obtain a census view of and average score for Acer, we assessed a spread of several popular and authoritative productive reviews published in Laptop Mag, CNET, ConsumerAffairs.com, DigitalTrends, Consumer Shopper, TrustedReviews and Expert Reviews.
