According to a recent study carried out by Sainsbury’s, it is estimated that in the UK alone 1.4 million edible bananas are wasted each day due to public discard. This flow of waste from domestic disposal is estimated to cost around £80m a year. Bananas are the world’s most exported fresh fruit, generating $10bn annually. A number of UK retailers have announced commitments to sourcing 100% sustainable bananas, including Aldi, Lidl and Asda. But the amount of UK household food waste is an issue that requires urgent attention. In that it has been estimated that UK domestic food waste has increased by 0.3 million tonnes since 2014, totaling 7.3 million tonnes of waste, a number of programmes have been developed to help educate consumers.
