Today is Earth Day, an annual event where people from around the world demonstrate support for environmental protection.

While Earth Day represents a significant annual event to help remind us all the perilous state the environment is in, including the need for fundamental social-economic change, why not spend Earth Day everyday?

Countless small acts on a daily basis can extend the ethos behind Earth Day to 365 days a year. Consider, for example, the story of Tommy Kleyn, who spent a half-hour every day cleaning up a heavily polluted waterfront on his way to work. Volunteering in your community, ensuring your home is environmentally friendly and your lifestyle is sustainable, and supporting the countless grassroots movements for a more environmentally and socially just world, can have a serious impact when it comes to making the basic sentiment of Earth Day a common principle in the broader practice and development of society.

On this note, we would like to celebrate Earth Day by raising awareness about the importance of Green Cities. More than half of the world’s population lives in cities. As the urban population grows and the effects of climate change worsen, our cities just like our economies and societies have to evolve. By supporting the development of Green Cities, Alternative Business and Renewable Energy, we can all assist in the fundamental rebuilding of our cities, towns, municipalities and states.

Please check out the Green Cities campaign run by The Earth Day Network. Over the next two years, the Green Cities campaign will mobilize a global movement to accelerate this transition. Join us in calling for a new era of green cities!

It is also important to acknowledge the key role business has to play in this transition to creating a more environmentally, socially and economically just world. As Global CEOs urge World Leaders on ‪climate‬ action, this call for action is hollow if companies, businesses and economies don’t meet the same need for change. Together we can support serious transformation in business and economy by moving our money into alternative, ethical businesses, who regularly put sustainable, climate-related and socially just policies into practice.
