Morrisons

Is Morrisons the most ethical and sustainable Supermarket?

Morrisons is a brand that is listed in The Good Shopping Guide’s Ethical Supermarket Ratings Table. Although the brand is yet to meet our ethical standards, we expect the brand to improve in the future. There are a number of different attributes that a brand must comply with in order for us to grant Ethical Accreditation and excels in some of them.

We would have more faith in this brand if it applied for Ethical Accreditation, which would allow The Good Shopping Guide to conduct a more detailed assessment and propose changes for ethical improvement. We recognise that this brand has much room for improvement, but we are confident that it will be Ethically Accredited in the upcoming years.

What do Morrisons do and what is its history?

The fifth-largest supermarket chain in the UK is WM Morrison Supermarkets, commercially known as Morrisons. The corporation operated 497 supermarkets in Scotland, Wales, and England, and one in Gibraltar as of 2021. The business’s main office is in Bradford, England. It was first established in 1899 as an egg and butter stall in Rawson Market, Bradford, England. Prior to 2004, the majority of Morrisons’ store sites were concentrated in the North of England. However, with Safeway’s acquisition that same year, the company’s footprint in Wales, Scotland, and the South of England dramatically rose.

For which criteria does Morrisons perform poorly?

Despite Morrisons ranking highly in many categories there are still some ethical issues yet to be dealt with by the company. These include Animal Welfare issues and Political Donations carried out by Morrisons’ parent company Clayton, Dubilier & Rice.

Additionally, Clayton, Dubilier & Rice owns a company involved in the Nuclear and Fossil Fuels industries and is therefore marked down in both of these categories.

In what areas does Morrisons score well for its ethics?

Morrisons scores above our benchmark in vital categories such as having Vegetarian and Vegan options, an Environmental Report and Organic products.
