How ethical and sustainable is Kyocera?

What does Kyocera do?

Kyocera’s first product was a ceramic insulator called a ‘kelcima’ that was used in television picture tubes. The company quickly adapted its technologies to manufacture a growing range of ceramic components for electronic and structural applications. As the NASA space programme, the birth of Silicon Valley, and the advancement of computer technology increased demand for semiconductor integrated circuits (ICs) in the 1960s, Kyocera developed ceramic semiconductor packages, which are still among its core product lines today.

Kyocera began expanding its material technologies in the mid-1970s, producing a diverse range of applied ceramic products such as solar photovoltaic modules, biocompatible tooth and joint replacement systems, industrial cutting tools, consumer ceramics such as ceramic-bladed kitchen knives and ceramic-tipped ballpoint pens, and lab-grown gemstones.
