How ethical and sustainable are Bakers?
Bakers is a Nestlé-owned dog food brand. The brand did not score well in our Ethical Cat and Dog Food Ratings Table. Bakers are currently unable to be granted Ethical Accreditation due to not meeting our Ethical Benchmark to be ethically-certified by The Good Shopping Guide. Regardless we do believe we will see a change in this company, and it will be Ethically Accredited in the future.
What is Bakers and what does it do?
When Edward Baker established a family flour business in 1851, the Bakers’ saga officially began. Edward Baker believed that dry dog food should be equally as appetising as it is nutritious, therefore in 1991, he introduced Bakers Complete. The company was founded in Suffolk, where it is still active today. With a selection of senior, puppy, small dog, and adult dog foods, Bakers dog food is suitable for dogs of all ages and sizes.
Where does Bakers score well as a brand ethically?
Bakers- although not Ethically Accredited- score well in areas in categories such as an Environmental Report, availability of Organic products, and stance on Nuclear power and Armaments. Bakers’ parent company Nestlé has declared a number of environmental targets, including Net Zero by 2050, planting 200m trees by 2030, 100% recyclable packaging by 2025, etc.
There is also evidence of progress on previous targets.
How can Bakers improve its Ethical Rating?
In order to improve its Ethical Rating, Bakers needs to consider taking action on areas of interest such as Animal Welfare and Genetic Modification.
Bakers could improve its Animal Welfare rating if its parent company, Nestlé, ceased involvement in animal testing.
