Beko

How ethical and sustainable is Beko?

Beko is included in The Good Shopping Guide’s Kettles Ethical Ratings Table. Although Beko has not yet upheld our ethical standards, we are hopeful that it will soon start acting more morally. Beko would have the chance to boost customer confidence by applying for Ethical Accreditation, which would entail a more thorough investigation and recommendations for ethical development.

Are you interested in seeing how Beko rates against other brands within the Ethical Kettles Sector? Visit the Kettles Ethical Ratings Table. From The Good Shopping Guide’s Ratings Tables, you can learn more about the criteria that our top-rated brands have fulfilled.

What does Beko do?

The most popular brand of household appliances in the UK today is Beko, which was established in 1989. More than 130 nations currently offer Beko’s Kettles, laundry equipment, refrigerators, dishwashers, stoves, and other small appliances. Beko’s manufacturing facilities will be carbon neutral by 2020, and the Kettle company also donates to Barnardo’s. The company Koç Holding A.Ş. owns Beko.

For which criteria does Beko perform poorly?

Beko was given a poor rating for its interest in fossil fuels because of its parent company’s strong involvement in the oil tanker, natural gas, and oil refinery industries. The business received a fair assessment of its views on human rights, a code of conduct, and armaments. Beko has been under fire from the UK Boycott Turkey movement for allegedly violating human rights.

The Beko code of conduct covers all necessary topics, however it is vague about restrictions on child labour and working hours, abiding by national law without imposing its own restrictions. The parent business of Beko also owns other defence firms and Otokar, a producer of military vehicles utilised in Turkey’s defence industry.

Past Criticisms of Beko’s ethical record

Beko came under fire when serious defects in their petrol cookers were linked to the deaths of 18 people between 2008 and 2015. When the grill door was closed, the cookers produced levels of carbon monoxide that could kill within minutes.

In what areas does Beko score well for its ethics?

Since Beko includes 2030 targets for energy consumption, water use, power use, waste generation, and investments in renewable energy sources, the company receives a high ranking for its environmental report. On the sustainability page evidence of advancement is also provided. Beko also receives a high score in our Nuclear Power, Animal Welfare and Political Donation categories.

How can Beko improve its ethical rating?

The Ethical rating of a brand is divided into three categories by The Good Shopping Guide: the Environment, People and Animals. Find out more about how we rate.

By revising its code of conduct to set its own limitations on child labour and working hours and by severing relationships with some companies that deal with fossil fuels, Beko may raise its score and comply with our fundamental ethical requirements.
