What does Beko do?
A leading home appliance brand in the UK today is Beko, which was established in 1989. More than 130 nations currently offer Beko’s refrigerators, laundry equipment, dishwashers, stoves, and other small appliances. Beko’s manufacturing facilities will be carbon neutral by 2020, and the washing machine company also donates to Barnardo’s. The company Koç Holding A.Ş. owns Beko.
For which criteria does Beko perform poorly?
The parent company of the brand is actively associated with subsidiaries in natural gas, oil tankers, and oil refining, Beko scored poorly for its participation in fossil fuels.
For human rights, code of conduct, and weapons, the company obtained a moderate rating.
The Beko code of conduct addresses all pertinent issues, however it is ambiguous when it comes to limitations on child labour and working hours, abiding by national legislation without setting its own restrictions. The parent company of Beko owns Otokar, a manufacturer of military vehicles used in the Turkish defence sector, as well as other defence businesses.
Past Criticisms of Beko’s ethical record
After 18 deaths between 2008 and 2015 were attributed to significant flaws in Beko gas cookers, the company came under fire. Using the grill with the door closed resulted in carbon monoxide levels high enough to kill within minutes.
In what areas does Beko score well for its ethics?
As the dishwasher brand’s sustainability page includes 2030 goals for energy consumption, water use, electricity use, trash production, and investments in renewable energy, Beko achieves a high rating for its environmental report. Evidence of progress is also described on the sustainability page. Beko also receives a high score in our Nuclear Power, Animal Welfare and Political Donation categories.
How can Beko improve its ethical rating?
The Ethical rating of a brand is divided into three categories by The Good Shopping Guide: the Environment, People and Animals. Find out more about how we rate.
Beko may improve its rating and meet our primary ethical criteria by amending its code of conduct to establish its own standards for working conditions and child labour, as well as by cutting ties with some businesses that deal with fossil fuels.
