Gap

Is Gap an ethical and sustainable fashion brand?

Gap, a fashion brand (owned by Next Plc) is given a low Ethical Rating by The Good Shopping Guide. Unfortunately, this brand receives a low Good Shopping Guide Ethical Score in our Ethical Fashion Retailers Ratings Table and has therefore not yet met our minimum Ethical Benchmark. This brand has several areas to improve upon before it would likely qualify for our Ethical Accreditation.

In what areas does Gap perform poorly for its ethics and sustainability policies?

Gap performs particularly poorly for our research criteria that examine a brand’s respect for and implementation of Human Rights. Multiple accusations have been launched at Gap and its parent company Next for their poor regard for the welfare of the workers in their supply chains. This has resulted in a bottom rating in the Human Rights category.

Additionally, Gap also receives a bottom rating for Organic, as no clothing made with 100% organic cotton could be found in the brand’s product range.

In what areas does Gap perform well?

Gap was awarded a top rating for Ethical Trading Schemes, as its parent company, Next, is a member of the Ethical Trading Initiative. This demonstrates that the company is committed to improving the treatment of workers in its supply chain, despite its poor environmental record.

Gap also receives a top rating for Animal Welfare, due to Next’s robust Animal Welfare Policy which confirms that all animal-derived materials are sourced ethically and that no animal testing occurs on cosmetics products.

How can the Gap brand improve its Ethical Rating?

The Good Shopping Guide’s score results from 15 ethical criteria in relation to Gap. To reach our Ethical Benchmark and qualify for our Ethical Accreditation, Gap has several issues to deal with, including its poor Human Rights track record.
