How ethical is Tesco?

Tesco is a British supermarket brand which sells bananas sourced from Costa Rica, Ecuador and Colombia. Tesco has been given a below-benchmark score on The Good Shopping Guide’s Ethical Bananas Ratings Table. Although it has not yet met our ethical benchmark, we hope to see Tesco make progress in future.

In which areas does Tesco perform poorly?

Tesco is awarded a bottom score for Animal Welfare as an investigation found mistreated cows which were part of the supply chain for a number of customers including Tesco.

In which areas does Tesco score well for its ethics?

Tesco is given a middle rating for our Fair Trade criterion as its bananas are mostly Fairtrade, and a top rating for Organic as it is Soil Association certified. It also gets a top score for its Environmental Report which contains lots of clear targets.

We found no criticisms of Tesco relating to; GM, Nuclear Power, Fossil Fuels, Political Donations or Armaments, so it scores well for these criteria.
