How ethical is Whistles?
Whistles, a fashion brand owned by TFG Ltd (The Foschini Group), is given a good ethical rating by The Good Shopping Guide. This brand receives an above-benchmark Good Shopping Guide Ethical Score in our Ethical Fashion Retailers Ratings Table. Because this brand has met our minimum benchmark, it stands a good chance to qualify for our Ethical Accreditation.
In what areas does Whistles perform well?
Whistles and its parent company, The Foschini Group, have not been found to make any Political Donations. Whistles is also a part of the Better Cotton Initiative, which strives for better working conditions for cotton farmers and the environment affected by cotton farming.
Both The Foschini Group and Whistles have also not been accused of any Human Rights abuses; in the Fashion industry, this is especially important, as so many garment workers are abused in workplaces and factories.
In what areas does Whistles perform poorly?
In its Sustainability Report, The Foschini Group sets goals that have no deadline for completion. Given the size of the organisation, this ought to be much better. Because of these indefinite targets, Whistles gets a low mark in our Environmental Report criteria. Specific goals help both consumers and investors know which companies are sustainable, and ethical and have a long-term vision for achieving Net Zero.
Furthermore, companies were asked to contribute information by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) about their management and regulation of freshwater resources. Transparency, governance and strategy, measuring and monitoring, risk assessment, aims and goals, and value chain participation are the six primary measures used to evaluate responding companies.
Whistles also stock no certified-Organic products. Certifications go some way to validating that cotton (one of the ‘dirtiest crops’) has not been grown in a way that is harmful to animals, to local ecosystems, farmers and cotton producers. It should be noted, however, that Whistles are members of the Better Cotton Initiative, and The Good Shopping Guide commends this effort for better traceability in its supply chain.
How can the Whistles brand improve its Ethical Rating?
The Good Shopping Guide’s score results from 15 ethical criteria in relation to Whistles. To boost its Ethical Score and rise up in our Ethical Ratings, Whistles should look to stock certified- Organic products, and apply for Ethical Accreditation.
