McDonald’s restaurants in the UK will see a phase out in the use of plastic straws. May 2018 is when the company policy will come into force.

The move comes in response to consumer demand, as the problem of plastic pollution continues to permeate through news media outlets and popular culture.

To replace plastic straws, the fast-food retailer will begin a trial of paper and biodegradable alternatives.

This is the latest announcement by McDonald’s, following a commitment to science-based targets and other policy developments regarding recyclability and packaging.
