During New York Climate Week, the problem of food waste was an important point of focus. Major food companies Kellogg, Campbell Soup, Carrefour, Unilever and Walmart (among others) all agreed to start tackling the issue.

As reported by Business Insider, the call to action list three points in a document for retailers and food produces to reduce food waste by 2020. This includes revision of labelling, among other tasks.

The world discards a staggering 1.3 billion tonnes of food waste each year. In fact, “the average UK household with children spends £700 a year on food that’s thrown away – in the United States, that figure is $1,500”. Additionally, “Food loss and waste is a major contributor to climate change, emitting 8 percent of annual greenhouse gases”. ,

It may be too soon to ask whether these moves signal the end of food waste, but the new commitments by the world’s largest food suppliers, processors and retailers suggest that the need for real policy and action is being taken seriously. Combined with public education efforts, it is possible that the problem will eventually become history.
