Tomorrow Machine, a Swedish design studio based in Stockholm & Paris, specializes in package, product and food concepts. They’re home of some interesting ideas, where material science and new technologies come together with ethical business values, providing a look at the future of ethical consumerism through the lens of innovative ideas that push the frontier of imagination.

How practical some of the inventions prove to be is beside the point; it’s the forward thinking and imaginative view of tomorrow that is really captured in some of these concepts. We need more of this sort of progressive and ethical vision from forward-thinking businesses today.

#1 – Microgarden Kit

“The Microgarden uses transparent seaweed based agar-agar gel as a growing medium, and it has many benefits. It allows the Microgarden to remain self-contained – which means you will never have to water the microgreens. Their roots absorb moisture from the gel. The clear gel also allows the home-farmer to see and experience the whole growing process, from when the seeds sprout to the roots growth.”

#2 – Oil package

A package made of caramelized sugar, coated with wax. To open it you crack it like an egg. When the material is cracked the wax do no longer protect the sugar and the package melts when it comes in contact with water. This package is made for oil-based food.

#3 – Smoothie Package

“Gel of the agar-agar seaweed and water are the only components used to make this package. To open it you pick the top. The package will wither at the same rate as it’s content. It is made for drinks that have a short life span and needs to be refrigerated, fresh juice, smoothies and cream for example.”

#4 – Self-cleaning plate and cup

#5 – Self-expanding instant food packaging

“This self-expanding instant food package combines different aspects of sustainability. It saves space in transportation by being compressed – at the same time as it is made out of a 100% bio based and biodegradable material, invented by Innventia.

When pouring hot water into the package the mechano-active material will react to the heat and transform from a compressed package to a serving bowl. This is the new generation of sustainable package design, using materials that are both smart and environmentally friendly.”

#6 – Rice packaging

“The rice package is made of a biodegradable beeswax. To open it you peel it like a fruit. The package is designed to contain dry goods, for example grains and rice.”
