How ethical is Acer?

The brand receives a below-benchmark Good Shopping Guide Ethical Score and so unfortunately does not pass our ethical criteria to be considered an ethical brand in our Ethical PCs, Laptops, and Tablets category.

What does Acer do?

Acer was founded in 1976 under the name Multitech, the Acer brand was created in 1987, signifying its move towards globalisation. The computer brand launched the world’s first convertible tablet PC in 2002. You can find more about Acer’s history here.

The ethical laptop brand offers desktops, monitors, smart devices, Chromebooks and other accessories.

In what areas does Acer perform well? 

Despite its low score, Acer does receive a good rating in some of our categories, including a top rating in the Conflict Minerals category.

Acer is a member of the Responsible Minerals Initiative and has a policy on Responsible Mineral Sourcing, which demonstrates that the company is working towards better practices to avoid purchasing conflict minerals.

Acer also receives a top rating for Environmental Report, as its latest sustainability information meets our requirements.

In what areas does Acer perform poorly?

Unfortunately, Acer receives a bottom rating in the Human Rights criterion, as the company has been linked to several cases of human rights abuse in China, including exploitation of the Uyghur peoples.

Acer also receives a low rating in the Other Criticisms category, due to the company’s alleged involvement in unethical activities such as tax avoidance and continuing to conduct business in Russia despite the boycott.

How could Acer rate higher on our Ethical PCs, Laptops and Tablets Ratings Table? 

Acer is not eligible for Ethical Accreditation due to its below-benchmark score according to The Good Shopping Guide. This is examined by looking at how the Environment, Animals, and People within a company and how much the brand considers this. Learn more about how we rate brands here.
