Chanel

How ethical is Chanel?

Chanel, a make up brand owned by Chanel S.A. is given a low ethical rating by The Good Shopping Guide. Unfortunately, this brand receives a low Good Shopping Guide ethical score in our Ethical Make Up Ratings Table and has therefore not yet met our minimum benchmark. This brand has several areas to improve upon before it would likely qualify for our Ethical Accreditation.

About Chanel

In 1910, Coco Chanel established the opulent French fashion house Chanel in Paris. Women’s ready-to-wear, luxury items, and accessories are Chanel’s specialties. When Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel started a millinery store at 160 Boulevard Malesherbes in 1909, the House of Chanel was born. The most “accessible” Chanel product may be its cosmetics, which are available at counters in many department shops throughout the world, including Harrods, Selfridges & Co., John Lewis, Debenhams and Boots.

But just how ethical is this famous (and infamous) luxury brand?

In what areas does Chanel perform poorly?

Chanel receives a poor rating for its lack of certified organic products, leading to a bottom rating in the Organic criterion.

Additionally, individuals associated with the U.S. division of Chanel donated money on numerous occasions to both prominent Republican and Democratic political candidates. Companies and brands involved in this receive a bottom rating in the Political Donations category, as these kind of donations prevent democracy from truly taking place.

In what areas does Chanel perform well?

Chanel receives a top rating in the Nuclear Power, Fossil Fuels and Armaments criterion, as Chanel does not profit from any of these unethical industries.

How can the Chanel brand improve its ethical rating?

The Good Shopping Guide’s score results from 15 ethical criteria in relation to Chanel. To reach our ethical benchmark and qualify for our Ethical Accreditation, Chanel has several issues to deal with, including its poor consideration of Animal Welfare and lack of Vegan/Vegetarian products.
