Citi

Is Citi ethical?

Citi has been researched and ranked in The Good Shopping Guide’s Ethical Banks & Building Societies Ratings Table and receives an extremely low score.

Although our ethical requirements have not yet been met by this company, we hope that in the future, it will make the necessary adjustments to operate as a more ethical business.

More information on the ethical issues faced by the sector, may be found in The Good Shopping Guide’s article on Ethical Banking. You can also use our Ethical Banks & Building Societies Ratings Table to compare Citi to other banks.

What does Citi do?

Citi is an American banking and financial services company operating in nearly 160 countries, including the United Kingdom. The parent company, Citigroup, was formed in 1998 after the merger of Citicorp and Travelers. Citi offers a range of services such as banking and investment options.

For which criteria does Citi score poorly?

Citi receives a bottom rating for Political Donations, as it has donated thousands of dollars in recent U.S. election cycles, according to OpenSecrets.

Additionally, Citi has come under fire for a range of controversial investments and loans, ranging from nuclear weapons companies to fossil fuel producers. As a result, Citi was given a bottom rating in the Irresponsible Lending criterion.

In what areas does Citi score well for its ethics?

Citi receives a top rating for the Environmental Report category, due to its detailed environmental targets which demonstrate its aims to improve its sustainability record. We hope to see Citi achieve these goals during our next assessment.

How can Citi improve its ethical rating?

The ethical rating of a Finance brand is divided into three categories by The Good Shopping Guide: the Environment, People and Other. Find out more about how we rate.

If Citi aims to meet our ethical benchmark in the future, it must improve its ethical ratings in numerous categories. This includes Irresponsible Lending and Political Donations, though there are also several other categories where work is needed.
