Fidelity

How ethical and sustainable is Fidelity?

Fidelity is a pension provider that appears in The Good Shopping Guide’s Ethical Pensions Ratings Table. Although Fidelity does not meet our Ethical Benchmark, we hope to see the business make progress in the future.

What does Fidelity do?

Fidelity Management & Research (FMR) was founded by Edward C. Johnson II in 1946. The business created Fidelity International Limited (FIL) in 1969 to cater to markets outside of the US. In 1980, it later spun off as a different business that was run and owned by its employees. In 1982, the FMR company initially began offering 401k programmes. Since 1984, it has offered automated stock trading.

It should be noted that Fidelity International has no affiliation with the American company, Fidelity Investments.

For which criteria does Fidelity perform poorly?

Fidelity was marked down under our criteria for Irresponsible Lending, due to its involvement in unethical investment practices. For instance, Fidelity International was named in the 2021 ‘Perilous Profiteering’ report for financing nuclear weapons manufacturers.

Fidelity also receives a bottom rating for Environmental Destruction, primarily for allegedly being one of the Top 30 investors in TotalEnergies, an energy company named as the 7th largest global developer of oil and gas production projects.

In what areas does Fidelity score well for its ethics?

Fidelity performs well for its Environmental Report, which receives a top rating in our assessment, due to the company effectively demonstrating its commitment to improving its environmental record.

How can Fidelity improve its rating?
