House of Fraser

How ethical and sustainable is the House of Fraser?

House of Fraser is a brand of furniture that appears in The Good Shopping Guide’s Ethical Furniture Ratings Table. Even though House of Fraser has not yet met our ethical standards, we expect the brand to improve in the future.

We would have more faith in this brand if it applied for Ethical Accreditation, which would result in a more detailed assessment and recommendations for ethical improvement from The Good Shopping Guide.

What does House of Fraser do?

House of Fraser (also known as Frasers) is a British store chain with 44 stores in the United Kingdom that is now part of the Frasers Group. Arthur and Fraser was founded in Glasgow, Scotland in 1849. Fraser & Sons was the brand’s name by 1891. During the early twentieth century, the company expanded steadily, and after WWII, a significant number of acquisitions transformed it into a national chain.

For which criteria does House of Fraser perform poorly?

Despite House of Fraser’s progress, there is still room for improvement. House of Fraser was marked down under our criteria for Animal Welfare, Ethical Accreditation, an Environmental Report, a Timber Sourcing Policy, Human Rights, and Other Criticisms.

Notably, House of Fraser’s bottom rating for Human Rights is a result of numerous criticisms of the company’s practices towards its workers, both directly and through its supply chain. In fact, House of Fraser has received so many criticisms that it has been marked down under the Human Rights+ category, which is only applied to brands with more than 5 serious human rights criticisms.

In what areas does House of Fraser score well for its ethics?

House of Fraser performs well in categories including Nuclear Power, Fossil Fuels, and Political Donations.

How can House of Fraser brand improve its Ethical Rating?

The Good Shopping Guide score results from multiple ethical criteria, and House of Fraser’s score has been calculated from these criteria. To reach our minimum Ethical Benchmark and qualify for Ethical Accreditation, House of Fraser has some issues to resolve, including Animal Welfare, Human Rights, and an Environmental Report.

Most importantly, we strongly encourage House of Fraser to improve its human rights record by treating its workers better and working with suppliers that do the same.
