Piz Buin

How ethical and sustainable is Piz Buin?

Piz Buin is included in The Good Shopping Guide’s Sun Protection Ethical Ratings Table. Although Piz Buin has not yet upheld our ethical standards, we are hopeful that in the future, the company will make the necessary adjustments to operate in a more ethical manner.

By submitting an application for Ethical Accreditation, which would involve a more thorough investigation and recommendations for ethical development, Piz Buin might boost customer trust.

What does Piz Buin do?

Piz Buin launched its first sun protection product in 1946 and was one of the first brands to implement SPF. The brand sells a range of moisturising products, tanning and protection and after suns. It also offers a range of mountain sun creams that have been designed specifically for high altitude conditions.

Piz Buin is owned by Johnson & Johnson. You can read more about the brand’s heritage here.

For which criteria does Piz Buin perform poorly?

Piz Buin received a low rating for Organic products, Animal Welfare, Vegan products, Irresponsible Marketing and Political Donations. Piz Buin’s parent company, Johnson & Johnson appears on PETAs list of companies that do test on animals.

The brand also has a policy that aims to use non animal alternatives whenever feasible but does still use animal testing.

Johnson & Johnson was also criticised for irresponsible marketing of opioids, for the brand agreed to a proposed settlement but claimed this was not an admission of wrongdoing. You can read more on this here.

The brand also makes regular political donations.

In what areas does Piz Buin score well for its ethics?

Piz Buin receives a high score for its Environmental Report, Genetic Modification policy, Nuclear Power issues and Armaments. Johnson & Johnson has a ‘health for humanity’ report detailing environmental achievements and goals for 2025.

How can Piz Buin improve its ethical rating?

The Ethical rating of a brand is divided into three categories by The Good Shopping Guide: the Environment, People and Animals. Find out more about how we rate.

Piz Buin might apply for Ethical Accreditation for more detailed guidance on how to improve. Piz Buin may improve its rating and fulfil our fundamental ethical requirements by ceasing all Political Donations and animal testing.

Why not check out The Good Shopping Guide‘s Ethical Accreditation if you work for or with a sun protection company that places ethics high on its priority list? This ethical accreditation has already benefited brands such as Tropic Skincare, Green People and Incognito.
