How ethical and sustainable is Piz Buin?
Piz Buin is included in The Good Shopping Guide’s Sun Protection Ethical Ratings Table. Although Piz Buin has not yet upheld our ethical standards, we are hopeful that in the future, the company will make the necessary adjustments to operate in a more ethical manner.
What does Piz Buin do?
Piz Buin launched its first sun protection product in 1946 and was one of the first brands to implement SPF. The brand sells a range of moisturising products, tanning and protection and after suns. It also offers a range of mountain sun creams that have been designed specifically for high altitude conditions.
Piz Buin is owned by Johnson & Johnson. You can read more about the brand’s heritage here.
For which criteria does Piz Buin perform poorly?
Piz Buin received a low rating in the Organic and Vegetarian/Vegan categories, as it does not have any products certified as either vegetarian, vegan or organic. The brand also has a policy that aims to use non animal alternatives whenever feasible but does still use animal testing. Consequently, Piz Buin receives a bottom rating in the Animal Welfare criterion.
In what areas does Piz Buin score well for its ethics?
Piz Buin receives a top rating for Nuclear Power, Fossil Fuels and Armaments. This is because Johnson & Johnson is not directly involved in any of these industries and therefore does not profit from them.
How can Piz Buin improve its ethical rating?
The Ethical rating of a brand is divided into three categories by The Good Shopping Guide: the Environment, People and Animals. Find out more about how we rate.
Significant improvement is required before Piz Buin could meet our ethical benchmark. We strongly encourage the brand and its parent company to clean up their act and work towards more ethical policies and practices.
