TCL

How ethical and sustainable is TCL?

TCL is included in The Good Shopping Guide‘s Ethical Televisions Ratings Table. The brand has yet to meet our Ethical Benchmark, but we believe that in the future, the brand will make the necessary changes to function as a more ethical organisation. TCL could improve consumer trust by applying for The Good Shopping Guide’s Ethical Accreditation, which would include a
more complete examination and suggestions for ethical development.

More information on the necessity of energy-efficient TVs may be found in The Good Shopping Guide to Ethical TVs. Then, in our Ethical Televisions Ratings Table compare it to other TV brands and their Ethical Ratings.

What does TCL do?

TCL is a global technology brand that was founded in 1981, it now has products and services in more than 160 countries. TCL provides smart TVs, soundbars, headphones, smartphones, tablets and a range of home appliance products. TCL is owned by TCL Technology Group Corporation.

For which criteria does TCL perform poorly?

TCL received a low rating for its Environmental report and lack of ECO labels. TCL’s ESG report does not contain any targets which is not acceptable for a brand of this size and none of its TVs host ECO labels. The brand receives a middle rating for its Code of Conduct, which is not strong enough for the brand and other Human rights issues. During the Coronavirus breakout, TCL’s factories still ran at full capacity despite a confirmed coronavirus case and dozens of workers with fever symptoms.

Past Criticisms of TCL’s ethical record

TCL faced criticism after it received an S&P Global ESG score of 1/100 which ranks based on corporate economic, Environmental and social performance.

In what areas does TCL score well for its ethics?

The Electrical and TV brand receives a high score for having no affiliations with Nuclear Power, Fossil Fuels, Animal Welfare Concerns, Armaments, Political Donations or Conflict Materials.
TCL is a member of RMI and released a Conflict Mineral announcement where suppliers must sign to agree that there is no usage of Conflict Materials to ensure that its supply chain is as ethical as possible.

How can TCL improve its Ethical Rating?

The Ethical Rating of a brand is divided into three categories by The Good Shopping Guide: the Environment, People and Animals.

If TCL applied for Ethical Accreditation it would receive more detailed guidance on how to improve.

TCL could begin improving its Ethical Rating and fulfil our fundamental ethical requirements by improving its Environmental Report and including specific targets to work towards as well as placing ECO labels on the products that earn them.
