How ethical and sustainable is Alienware?
Alienware is a brand of computer that appears in The Good Shopping Guide’s Ethical PCs, Laptops, and Tablets Ratings Table. Although Alienware has not yet met our Ethical Benchmark, we hope to see the brand make progress in the future.

We would have extra confidence in this brand if it submitted itself to apply for Ethical Accreditation, whereby The Good Shopping Guide would make further detailed assessments and recommendations for ethical improvement in Alienware’s CSR and ESG efforts and practices.

Read more about the ethical issues facing the tech sector and laptop brands in particular by learning from our Ethical Laptops, Computers, and PCs article.

What does Alienware do?

Alienware was founded in 1996 as Saikai of Miami, Inc. by childhood friends Nelson Gonzalez and Alex Aguila. The brand manufactures desktops, notebooks, workstations, and PC gaming consoles. Employees claim that the name Alienware was chosen due to the founder’s love of the hit television show The X-Files, which also inspired the science-fiction-themed names of product lines such as Area-51, Hangar 18, and Aurora. It changed its name to Alienware in 1997.

For which criteria does Alienware perform poorly?

Despite Alienware’s progress ethically, there is still room for improvement. Alienware was marked down under our criteria for The Good Shopping Guide’s research in Human Rights, Fossil Fuels, and Armaments. The brand also falls below our benchmark and therefore lacks the necessary level of ethics to be considered for Ethical Accreditation.

In what areas does Alienware score well for its ethics?

The brand received a top rating in areas of The Good Shopping Guide’s assessment of Alienware’s policies and practices concerning Conflict Minerals, Code of Conduct and Eco Labels. For more information on how we research and rank tech brands, see our ethical research methodology page.

How can Alienware improve its Ethical Rating?

The Good Shopping Guide Ethical Scores result from multiple ethical criteria, and Alienware’s score has been calculated from these criteria. To reach our minimum Ethical Benchmark and qualify for Ethical Accreditation, Alienware has some issues to resolve, including Human Rights issues, Fossil Fuels, and Political Donations.
