What does Galaxy do?

Galaxy is a chocolate manufactured by Mars Inc. Galaxy was first made in the United Kingdom in 1960 and is sold in many countries worldwide. It is popular for its silky texture and range of chocolates including caramel, milk chocolate and cookie crumble.

In which areas does Galaxy perform poorly?

Galaxy was marked down under our criteria for Political Donations as parent company Mars Inc. has donated above our threshold in recent election cycles. Find out more about how we rate by exploring our ethical criteria.

Past Criticisms of Galaxy’s record

The human rights group International Rights Advocates filed a lawsuit against chocolate companies including Nestlé and Mars on behalf of eight Malian citizens. Despite Galaxy boasting a Protecting Children Action Plan, Mars was allegedly complicit in trafficking children and forcing the labour of harvesting cocoa in the Ivory Coast.

In which areas does Galaxy score well for its ethics?

Galaxy’s parent company, Mars Inc, has a Sustainability Report with targets for carbon emissions and more, so Galaxy gets a good score for its Environmental Report. It also gets a top score for our Vegetarian criterion due to its vegan chocolate ranges.

We found no criticisms of Galaxy relating to Nuclear, Fossil Fuels, or Armaments, so it scores well for these criteria.

How can Galaxy improve its ethical rating?

The below-benchmark score that Galaxy is awarded with on The Good Shopping Guide’s Ethical Biscuits Ratings Table is the result of an evaluation of multiple ethical criteria.

To reach our minimum ethical benchmark and qualify for Ethical Accreditation, Galaxy has some issues to resolve, including its use of palm oil and GMOs. If it applies for Ethical Accreditation, The Good Shopping Guide will be able to give Galaxy some guidance on how to improve its score.
