Homebase

How ethical and sustainable is Homebase?

Homebase is a brand of furniture that appears in The Good Shopping Guide’s Ethical Furniture Ratings Table. Although Homebase has not yet met our Ethical Benchmark, we hope to see the brand make progress in the future.

What does Homebase do?

The grocery chain Sainsbury’s and the Belgian retailer GB-Inno-BM established Sainsbury’s Homebase in 1979. The goal was to make DIY furniture at supermarket prices. On March 3, 1981, the first store on Purley Way in Croydon opened. In January 1995, Sainsbury’s purchased Texas Homecare, a rival shop company, from Ladbrokes, increasing the size of Homebase. These stores were rebranded and changed to the Homebase concept starting in February 1996 with the Longwell Green, Bristol, location. The transformation was finished by 1999.

For which ethical and sustainability criteria does Homebase perform poorly?

Despite Homebase’s progress, there is still room for improvement. Homebase was marked down under our criteria for an Environmental Report, Fossil Fuels, Political Donations, and Animal Welfare as well as Other Criticisms.

In what areas does Homebase score well for its ethics?

This brand performs well in areas of critique, including Human Rights, Timber Sourcing Policy, Nuclear Power, and Armaments.

How can the Homebase brand improve its Ethical Rating?

The Good Shopping Guide score results from multiple ethical criteria, and Homebase’s score has been calculated from these criteria. To reach our minimum Ethical Benchmark and qualify for Ethical Accreditation, Homebase has some issues to resolve, including Political Donations, Fossil Fuels, and an Environmental Report. Upon the resolution of these sustainability issues within the business, Ethical Accreditation will be that much easier to achieve.
