Malibu

Is Malibu an ethical spirits brand?

Malibu, a bestselling coconut-flavoured rum liqueur, is owned by Pernod Ricard.

Unfortunately, like other Pernod Ricard-owned brands, Malibu is a below-benchmark brand due to its low score within The Good Shopping Guide’s Ethical Spirits sector.

Although it currently has a below-benchmark score, The Good Shopping Guide still recommends that Malibu get in touch and apply for Ethical Accreditation. After receiving its application, we would assess Malibu and offer it some advice on how it could improve its score.

Do you want to find out how other brands within the Ethical Spirits sector compare against Malibu?

Visit the Spirits Ethical Ratings Table. Our Ratings Table can help you find out more about the criteria a brand has to meet to meet our minimum Ethical Benchmark. The Good Shopping Guide encourages all brands to follow the example set by our top-rated brands and adopt some more ethical practices.

What does Malibu receive a top rating for?

Similarly to other Pernod Ricard brands, Malibu receives a top rating for our Environmental Report research category.

Pernod Ricard has an Annual Report which contains a small section about the environment but this section lacks targets and detail.

However, it does have a 2030 Sustainability & Responsibility Roadmap. Its Roadmap contains a range of targets for environmental issues such as waste, carbon emissions and packaging.

What does Malibu have a bottom score for Public Record Criticisms?

Recently, a lawsuit was filed against Pernod Ricard USA. The lawsuit states that because Pernod Ricard’s website is incompatible with screen-reading software, it is not fully accessible to people who are legally blind or visually impaired.

According to the lawsuit, Pernod Ricard’s website violates both the New York City Human Rights Law and the Americans with Disabilities Act.

What can Malibu do to improve its score?

The low score that Malibu receives from The Good Shopping Guide is the result of a calculation of multiple ethical criteria.

Despite its below-benchmark rating, we encourage Malibu to apply for Ethical Accreditation. After it applies, The Good Shopping Guide would be able to offer Malibu some advice on how to work on its bottom scores to become a more ethical alcohol brand.
