Müller

How ethical is Müller?

Müller is a yoghurt brand which has a below-benchmark score on The Good Shopping Guide’s Ethical Yoghurt Ratings Table. Although Müller has not yet met our ethical benchmark, we hope to see the brand make progress in the future.

We would have extra confidence in Müller if it submitted itself to apply for Ethical Accreditation, whereby The Good Shopping Guide would make further detailed assessment and recommendations for ethical improvement. Find out more about the ethical issues facing the Yoghurt sector.

What does Müller do?

Müller is a large UK-based manufacturer of a range of yoghurts including Müllerlight, Müller Corner and Müllerice.

In which areas does Müller perform poorly?

Müller was marked down under our criteria for Organic and Vegetarian as it does not have any certification for its products. It also gets a bottom rating for Animal Welfare after being placed in the bottom tier by a 2020 BBFAW report.

Müller gets a middle rating for GM as it does not have a statement clarifying its stance on their use, but we also found no criticisms in this area. Find out more about how we rate by exploring our ethical criteria.

Past Criticisms of Müller’s record

Müller’s staff at a factory in Gloucestershire went on strike in 2022 over what they termed “excessive” rota changes, and in 2021 the company was prosecuted by the HSE after a worker lost several fingers in an accident at the Müller site in Shropshire. In 2020 the brand was also criticised for launching a range of yoghurts containing alcohol.

In which areas does Müller score well for its ethics?

Müller scored well for its Environmental Report, as the brand has a Sustainability Action Plan containing good targets for carbon emissions, recycling, waste and more.

Müller scores well for Nuclear, Fossil Fuels, Political Donations and Armaments due to a lack of criticisms across these criteria.

How can Müller improve its ethical rating?

The below-benchmark score that Müller is awarded with on The Good Shopping Guide’s Ethical Yoghurt Ratings Table is the result of an evaluation of multiple ethical criteria.

To reach our minimum ethical benchmark and qualify for Ethical Accreditation, Müller has some issues to resolve, including its poor Animal Welfare record. If it applies for Ethical Accreditation, The Good Shopping Guide will be able to give Müller some guidance to improve on these areas.
