Nokia

How ethical is Nokia?

Nokia, a mobile phone brand owned by HMD Global Oy, is given a high Ethical Rating by The Good Shopping Guide. We are pleased to say that Nokia receives a high Good Shopping Guide Ethical Score in our Ethical Mobile Phones Ratings Table and has therefore met our minimum Ethical Benchmark and is eligible for Ethical Accreditation.

In which areas does Nokia perform well?

There is currently no publicly known connection between Nokia, its parent companies and the Nuclear industries (energy or weapons). Neither have there been any allegations of Animal cruelty or welfare abuses towards Nokia or its parent companies. This mobile phone brand, therefore, receives good scores for these criteria.

Additionally, HMD has a good, robust Code of Conduct, which specifies that child labour (for children under the age of 15) will not be tolerated.

This Code of Conduct also refers to Conflict Minerals, stating that, “HMD is fully committed to avoiding the use of materials that directly or indirectly contribute to conflict or violation of human rights. We require our suppliers to report on where the 3TG metals in our products were sourced we also require that they commit to sourcing materials that did not directly or indirectly contribute to conflict, human rights violations or environmental degradation.”

In which areas does Nokia perform poorly?

HMD Global has a Sustainability Report, which mentions sustainability and environmental issues such as GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions, responsible water use, and waste disposal. However, no targets are included in this report and very little evidence of progress is written about, so a bottom rating has been given for our Environment Report category.

How can the Nokia brand improve its Ethical Rating?

The Good Shopping Guide’s score results from 15 ethical criteria in relation to Nokia. To reach our Ethical Benchmark and qualify for our Ethical Accreditation, Nokia has several issues to deal with, including its Environmental Reporting.
