Pedigree

How ethical is Pedigree?

Owned by Mars Inc, Pedigree is a popular dog food brand which is recognised by its yellow and red packaging. Unfortunately, Pedigree does not reach our minimum ethical benchmark and therefore cannot be classed as ethical. As a result, it has a low ranking on The Good Shopping Guide’s Ethical Cat and Dog Food Ratings Table.

If it were to apply for Ethical Accreditation, The Good Shopping Guide could provide Pedigree with a detailed assessment and recommendations on how it can improve to reach our benchmark.

The Ethical Cat and Dog Food Ratings Table shows where Pedigree ranks against other brands within the Cat and Dog Food sector and can help you learn more about the criteria that it needs to meet in order to reach our minimum ethical benchmark.

We encourage all brands to follow in the footsteps of our top-rated brands and apply for Ethical Accreditation.

What does Pedigree receive a top score for?

Pedigree receives a top score under Armaments and Nuclear Power due to a lack of negative records. It also receives a top score for its Environmental Report. Pedigree’s parent company Mars has a page dedicated to sustainability within pet food. Its three goals are to reduce environmental impacts, source responsible ingredients and reduce the impact of unsustainable packaging.

Mars also has a Healthy Planet page on its website with details on how its goals to become more sustainable.

What does Pedigree receive a bottom score for?

Pedigree receives a bottom score under The Good Shopping Guide’s Organic criteria. This is because like other brands owned by Mars Inc, it does not offer any organic pet food. For more information on how we rate brands for their ethics, visit our How We Rate research methodology page.

What can Pedigree do to improve its score?

Pedigree’s score is the result of a calculation of multiple ethical criteria carried out by The Good Shopping Guide. We would like to see Pedigree improve upon its bottom score in the Organic category by introducing some organic dog food products which would help its place rise on our table. Hopefully, Pedigree will improve upon these bottom ratings so it can see its score rise on the Ethical Cat and Dog Food Ratings Table and we could offer it Ethical Accreditation for its dog food.

Could your cat food or dog food brand benefit from The Good Shopping Guide’s Ethical Accreditation? To find out which other brands have earned this certification for ethics and sustainability, view our Ratings Tables. To learn more, get in touch with us or complete our short evaluation form.
