Perrier

Is Perrier the most ethical and sustainable Bottled Water brand?

Perrier is listed in The Good Shopping Guide’s Ethical Bottled Water Ratings Table. Although the brand is yet to meet our ethical standards, we expect the brand to improve in the future. There are a number of different attributes and research criteria that a brand must comply with in order for us to grant Ethical Accreditation and while Perrier excels in some of them, there are still many ethical practices that Perrier needs to put in place.

We would have extra confidence in this brand if it submitted itself to apply for Ethical Accreditation, whereby The Good Shopping Guide would be able to make a further detailed assessment and provide recommendations for ethical improvement. We acknowledge that there is a lot of room for improvement by this brand, but we are confident that this brand can become Ethically Accredited in the future.

What does Perrier do and what is its history?

In 1863, Perrier was first made available in Britain. In 1898, Dr. Louis Perrier purchased a water spring, built a spa nearby, and began bottling and selling the water. Later, he sold the spring to wealthy British visitor St. John Harmsworth. Lord Northcliffe and Lord Rothermere, two newspaper moguls, had a younger brother named Harmsworth. To learn the language, he travelled to France. He chose to purchase the spring after Dr. Perrier demonstrated it to him. To raise the funds, he sold his part of the family newspapers. The spa was closed by Harmsworth since they were no longer in style at the time. He gave the spring a new name, Source Perrier, and began bottling the water in recognisable green containers.

For which criteria does Perrier perform poorly?

Despite Perrier ranking highly in many of our research categories there are still some issues yet to be dealt with by the company. Perrier should clarify its position on Genetic Modification and Animal Welfare.

In what areas does Perrier score well for its ethics?

Perrier does score above our benchmark in vital categories such as publishing an Environmental Report, and no investments in or profits made from the Nuclear industries or Armaments.
