How ethical is PEZ?

PEZ is a sweets brand owned by PEZ Candy Inc. which has a below-benchmark score on The Good Shopping Guide’s Ethical Sweets Ratings Table.

Although PEZ has not yet met our ethical benchmark, we hope to see the brand make progress in the future.

We would have extra confidence in PEZ if it submitted itself to apply for Ethical Accreditation, whereby The Good Shopping Guide would make further detailed assessment and recommendations for ethical improvement.

What does PEZ do?

PEZ was invented in Vienna, Austria in 1927 as an alternative to smoking. It moved most production to the United States in 1973 and its dispensers have since become highly collectible items.

In which areas does PEZ perform poorly?

Despite PEZ’s progress, there is still room for improvement. PEZ was marked down under our criteria for the Environment and Palm Oil Free criterion, due to a lack of available information in these areas.

Find out more about how we rate by exploring our ethical criteria.

In which areas does PEZ score well for its ethics?

PEZ scores well for not using genetically modified ingredients, resulting in a top rating in the Genetic Modification criterion.

We found criticisms of PEZ relating to Nuclear or Fossil Fuels, so it also scores well for these criteria.

How can PEZ improve its ethical rating?

The below-benchmark score that PEZ is awarded on The Good Shopping Guide’s Ethical Sweets Ratings Table is the result of an evaluation of multiple ethical criteria.

To reach our minimum ethical benchmark and qualify for Ethical Accreditation, PEZ has some issues to resolve, including  its lack of a Code of an Environmental Report and use of palm oil.

If it applies for Ethical Accreditation, The Good Shopping Guide will be able to give PEZ some guidance to improve on these areas.

Were you aware that your brand could benefit from Ethical Accreditation? Brands accredited by The Good Shopping Guide can display our Ethical Mark, showcasing to consumers that it is an ethical and sustainable brand.
