Prewetts

How ethical is Prewetts?

Prewetts is a biscuit brand which has a below-benchmark score on The Good Shopping Guide’s Ethical Biscuits Ratings Table. Although Prewetts has not yet met our ethical benchmark, we hope to see the brand make progress in the future.

We would have extra confidence in Prewetts if it applied  for Ethical Accreditation, whereby The Good Shopping Guide would make further detailed assessment and recommendations for ethical improvement. Find out more about the ethical issues facing the Biscuits sector.

What does Prewetts do?

Prewetts originated from a ginger parkin recipe used by Frederick Shaw in 1936 to set up a local biscuit company in the North East of England. The brand grew into a large national scale company after the Second World War.

In which areas does Prewetts perform poorly?

Prewetts was marked down under our criteria for its Environmental Report due to a lack of clear targets which we would expect from a company this size. It also gets a bottom score for Palm Oil, as its products contain this ingredient, and for our Organic and Vegetarian criteria due to a lack of certification. Find out more about how we rate by exploring our ethical criteria.

Prewetts is awarded a bottom score for Fossil Fuels as its parent company also owns Calderys (which offers high temperature solutions to coal power plants) and a middle score for Armaments due to a similar link to aerospace production for the defence industry.

Past Criticisms of Prewetts’ record

We found no public record criticisms of Prewetts.

In which areas does Prewetts score well for its ethics?

Parent company Biscuit International claims to have been non-GMO since 2016, so Prewetts gets a high score for GM. We found no criticisms of Prewetts relating to Nuclear, Animal Welfare, or Political Donations so it scores well for these criteria.

How can Prewetts improve its ethical rating?

The below-benchmark score that Prewetts is awarded with on The Good Shopping Guide’s Ethical Biscuits Ratings Table is the result of an evaluation of multiple ethical criteria.

To reach our minimum ethical benchmark and qualify for Ethical Accreditation, Prewetts has some issues to resolve, including its use of palm oil. If it applies for Ethical Accreditation, The Good Shopping Guide will be able to give Prewetts some guidance on how to improve its score.
