Pukka

Is Pukka an ethical tea brand?

Pukka is a brand that produces tea, herbs and supplements. Pukka was founded by Tim Westwell and Sebastian Pole in the UK and is one of The Good Shopping Guide’s top-rated Ethical Tea brands. The brand is well known for focusing on wellbeing through a variety of herbal teas with names such as ‘Peace’ and ‘Womankind’.

Pukka scores high on the Ethical Tea Ratings Table and if it were to apply for Ethical Accreditation, The Good Shopping Guide could then provide it with an assessment and some detailed recommendations before awarding it with our Ethical Mark. The Ethical Tea Ratings Table shows how Pukka ranks against other tea brands and can help you learn more about the criteria that Pukka has met to meet our ethical benchmark. We encourage all brands to follow in Pukka’s footsteps as an ethical brand and to apply for Ethical Accreditation.

In which areas does Pukka perform well?

Pukka performs well in almost all our criteria, but especially under our Organic category. Pukka sells lots of organic teas which have been verified by the Soil Association and its website has a page dedicated to its organic vision. Pukka has also developed its own ‘Best Practice Organic Toolkit’ with six key areas of focus including farmer livelihoods, water security and empowering the next generation.

Due to the lack of negative records, Pukka scores well under Animal Welfare and Public Record Criticisms.

How can Pukka improve its score?

As Pukka has a Fair for Life certification, we have awarded it a middle score for Fairtrade. If Pukka were to be awarded Fairtrade certification, it would see its score rise. Pukka unfortunately receives a bottom score for Political Donations as its parent company CVC Capital Partners donated over $1.1m in the 2018-22 election cycles.

What can Pukka do to improve its score?

Pukka’s score is the result of the calculation of multiple ethical criteria by The Good Shopping Guide. To be awarded Ethical Accreditation and see its score rise on the Ethical Tea Ratings Table, Pukka need only to apply.

By improving upon some key issues such as its Fairtrade status and bottom score for Political Donations, Pukka could see its score rise further on our table. As many consumers like to choose ethical and sustainable brands, The Good Shopping Guide encourages Pukka and other brands within the Ethical Tea sector to apply for Ethical Accreditation.
