Pukka

Is Pukka an ethical tea brand?

Pukka is a brand that produces tea, herbs and supplements and has been owned by CVC Capital Partners since 2021. The brand is well known for focusing on wellbeing through a variety of herbal teas with names such as ‘Peace’ and ‘Womankind’.

Unfortunately, Pukka receives a below-benchmark score in The Good Shopping Guide’s Ethical Tea Ratings Table and therefore does not meet our requirements to be considered ethical.

The Ethical Tea Ratings Table shows how Pukka ranks against other tea brands and can help you learn more about the criteria that Pukka has met to meet our ethical benchmark. We encourage all brands to follow in Pukka’s footsteps as an ethical brand and to apply for Ethical Accreditation.

In which areas does Pukka perform well?

Pukka performs well in our Organic category. Pukka sells lots of organic teas which have been verified by the Soil Association and its website has a page dedicated to its organic vision. Pukka has also developed its own ‘Best Practice Organic Toolkit’ with six key areas of focus including farmer livelihoods, water security and empowering the next generation.

Due to the lack of negative records, Pukka scores well under Animal Welfare and Public Record Criticisms.

In which areas does Pukka perform poorly?

Unfortunately, Pukka receives a bottom rating in several categories, primarily due to its ownership by CVC Capital Partners. This includes a bottom rating in the Fossil Fuels and Political Donations criteria, as CVC is involved in the fossil fuels industry and makes regular political donations in the United States.

What can Pukka do to improve its score?

Pukka’s score is the result of the calculation of multiple ethical criteria by The Good Shopping Guide. If Pukka were to improve in certain areas, it could eventually meet our ethical benchmark.

We recommend that Pukka’s parent company, CVC Capital Partners, ceases involvement with the fossil fuels industry and stops making political donations.
