Sky Mobile

How ethical and sustainable is Sky Mobile?

Sky Mobile is a low-ranking brand in The Good Shopping Guide’s Ethical Ratings & Comparison Tables.

Sky Mobile is a mobile phone network owned by Comcast Corporation/Sky Group and receives a poor Good Shopping Guide score in our Mobile Phones Networks Ratings Table. Although Sky Mobile has not yet met our Ethical Benchmark, we hope to see the brand make progress in the future.

In which areas does Sky Mobile perform well?

Sky Mobile performs well for our criteria relating to Animal Welfare and also has no known involvement or investments in nuclear activities. Our research also has not found Sky Mobile to either fund or provide information or services for the defence industries.

Sky publishes an annual Impact Report, which does include a Net Zero by 2030 target, approved by the Science Based Targets initiative. This report also outlines recent environmental achievements from Sky, such as using hybrid vans and reducing carbon emissions in some areas of its business practice since 2018.

In which areas does Sky Mobile perform poorly?

Despite Sky Mobile’s progress, there is still room for improvement. The brand was marked down under our criteria for Human Rights, Political Donations and Other Criticisms.

In 2019, The Washington Post reported that Sky had come under fire from civil rights organisations for undercutting laws passed during the Reconstruction era that prevent racial discrimination. The cable television company is being sued for $20 billion in accordance with legislation that asserts that Black people have the same legal right to a contract as any white person.

Comcast is a regular donator to various US parties and candidates. You can see a history of their donations at Open Secrets. Other political involvement includes Comcast Corporation’s donation to the main sponsor of the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill in Florida, which seeks to ban discussions around sexual orientation and gender identity in schools. Additionally, Comcast gave a total of $28,000 to the top supporters of anti-LGBT legislation in the USA since 2020, despite publicly supporting the LGBTQ+ community in recent years. This hypocrisy means that Sky Mobile receives a low rating for our Human Rights criteria.

How can Sky Mobile brand improve its Ethical Rating?

The Good Shopping Guide score results from multiple ethical criteria in relation to Sky Mobile. To reach our minimum ethical benchmark and qualify for Ethical Accreditation, Sky Mobile has some issues to resolve, including its poor track record for Human Rights, and regard for civil rights.
