What does Soap & Glory do?

Soap & Glory was launched by Marcia Kilgore in 2006 to be a line of affordable bath, body and cosmetics products, apparently inspired by fashion brand H&M. Soap & Glory was bought up by Alliance Boots in 2014, and is now owned by Walgreens (Walgreens Boots Alliance).

In which areas does Soap & Glory perform poorly?

Soap & Glory was marked down under our criteria for Organic products, Animal Welfare, Vegan products, Irresponsible Marketing and Political Donations. Walgreens appears on PETAs list of companies that do test on animals, despite the brand’s claims to the contrary.

Soap & Glory also gets a bottom rating for Political Donations, as in recent election cycles, its parent company Walgreens has donated over $2.1 million. Find out more about how we rate by exploring our ethical criteria.

Past Criticisms of Soap & Glory’s record

Soap & Glory’s parent company, Walgreens Boots Alliance, faced criticism as more than 3,000 lawsuits were filed against it claiming that the company played down the risk of overdose and addiction to some of its products.

In which areas does Soap & Glory score well for its ethics?

We found no criticisms of Soap & Glory relating to; GM, Nuclear Power, Fossil Fuels, Armaments or Irresponsible Marketing, so it scores well for these criteria. It also gets a top score for its Environmental Report, as Walgreens’ ESG Report 2022 includes targets plus evidence of progress in lots of areas including carbon emissions and waste.

How can Soap & Glory improve its ethical rating?

The below-benchmark score that Soap & Glory is awarded with on The Good Shopping Guide’s Ethical Soap & Shower Gel Ratings Table is the result of an evaluation of multiple ethical criteria.

To reach our minimum ethical benchmark and qualify for Ethical Accreditation, Soap & Glory has some issues to resolve, including its use of animal testing and lack of Organic certification. If it applies for Ethical Accreditation, The Good Shopping Guide will be able to give Soap & Glory some guidance to improve on these areas.
