Is Whirlpool an ethical dishwasher brand?

Owned by the American manufacturer of home appliances, Whirlpool produces a variety of appliances including dishwashers.

Unfortunately, Whirlpool does not meet our minimum ethical benchmark within The Good Shopping Guide’s Ethical Dishwashers sector.

Due to Whirlpool’s below-benchmark score, it is not currently eligible for Ethical Accreditation.  Nonetheless, we still encourage Whirlpool to get in touch with us and apply. After we receive its application, The Good Shopping Guide will provide Whirlpool with some tips on how to improve its score to become a more eco-friendly dishwasher brand.

The Good Shopping Guide recommends that all brands introduce more ethical and sustainable policies like our top-rated brands.

Does Whirlpool have a Code of Conduct?

Whirlpool Corporation has a robust Code of Conduct. It does say that children as young as 14 or 15 can be hired. However, it justifies this decision in certain cases when the situation complies with International Labour Organization guidelines.

As a result, Whirlpool receives a top rating for our Code of Conduct category.

Why does Whirlpool have a bottom rating for Public Record Criticisms?

In recent years, Whirlpool Corporation settled a class action lawsuit for US$21 million. The lawsuit alleged that the company sold dishwashers which were faulty, causing them to leak. The plaintiffs claimed that Whirlpool had known about the defect yet denied its existence for years.

As a result, Whirlpool receives a bottom rating for Public Record Criticisms.

What can Whirlpool do to improve its score?

Whirlpool’s below benchmark score on The Good Shopping Guide’s Dishwashers Ethical Ratings Table is the result of a consideration of multiple ethical criteria.

Even though it has a bottom score in the Ethical Dishwashers sector, The Good Shopping Guide recommends that Whirlpool contacts us to apply for Ethical Accreditation. After receiving its application, The Good Shopping Guide will Whirlpool some tailored advice on how to improve its score on the Dishwashers Ethical Ratings Table.
