Find out more about the ethical issues facing the Ethical Soap & Shower Gel sector.

What does Yardley do?

Yardley (also known as Yardley of London) is one of the oldest cosmetics brands in the world. It was established in 1770 and had become a major brand by the start of the 20th century, receiving its first Royal Warrant in 1921. Yardley has been owned by Indian multinational conglomerate Wipro since 2009.

In which areas does Yardley perform poorly?

Yardley was marked down under our criteria for Organic products and Vegetarian/Vegan products due to a lack of certification, and for Nuclear Power and Fossil Fuels. Wipro, Yardley’s parent company, is a leading provider of Metal Additive Manufacturing to multiple industries including the nuclear sector, and also offers data services to the oil and gas industries.

Yardley also gets a bottom rating for Political Donations, as in recent U.S. election cycles, its parent company Wipro has donated thousands of dollars. Find out more about how we rate by exploring our ethical criteria.

In which areas does Yardley score well for its ethics?

Unfortunately, there are very few categories in which Yardley receives a top rating. However, as neither the brand nor its parent company was found to be involved in the production or usage of GMOs, Yardley attains a top rating for the Genetic Modification criterion.

How can Yardley improve its ethical rating?

The below-benchmark score that Yardley is awarded with on The Good Shopping Guide’s Ethical Soap & Shower Gel Ratings Table is the result of an evaluation of multiple ethical criteria.

As reflected in its low GSG score, Yardley has a lot of issue to resolve before it can reach our minimum ethical benchmark and qualify for Ethical Accreditation. We recommend the company addresses its performance in the following categories: Environmental Report, Organic, Nuclear Power, Fossil Fuels, Animal Welfare, Vegetarian/vegan Verified, Armaments, Political Donations and Public Record Criticisms.
