Yardley

How ethical is Yardley?

Yardley is a brand of soap and shower products which has a below-benchmark score on The Good Shopping Guide’s Ethical Soap & Shower Gel Ratings Table. Although Yardley has not yet met our ethical benchmark, we hope to see the brand make progress in the future.

We would have extra confidence in Yardley if it submitted itself to apply for Ethical Accreditation, whereby The Good Shopping Guide would make further detailed assessment and recommendations for ethical improvement.

What does Yardley do?

Yardley (also known as Yardley of London) is one of the oldest cosmetics brands in the world. It was established in 1770 and had become a major brand by the start of the 20th century, receiving its first Royal Warrant in 1921. Yardley has been owned by Indian multinational conglomerate Wipro since 2009.

In which areas does Yardley perform poorly?

Yardley was marked down under our criteria for Organic products and Vegetarian/Vegan products due to a lack of certification, and for Nuclear Power and Fossil Fuels. Wipro, Yardley’s parent company, is a leading provider of Metal Additive Manufacturing to multiple industries including the nuclear sector, and also offers data services to the oil and gas industries.

Yardley also gets a bottom rating for Political Donations, as in recent election cycles, its parent company Wipro has donated over $132k. Find out more about how we rate by exploring our ethical criteria.

Past Criticisms of Yardley’s  record

Yardley’s parent company, Wipro, was recently criticised for almost halving salaries for its graduate scheme employees, and giving participants very little notice or time to make a decision about whether to take the offers given.

In which areas does Yardley score well for its ethics?

We found no criticisms of Yardley relating to; GM, Animal Welfare or Irresponsible Marketing, so it scores well for these criteria. It gets a middle score for its Environmental Report, as Wipro has a Sustainability Report 2021/22 with some targets but these are not specific to Yardley.

How can Yardley improve its ethical rating?

The below-benchmark score that Yardley is awarded with on The Good Shopping Guide’s Ethical Soap & Shower Gel Ratings Table is the result of an evaluation of multiple ethical criteria.

To reach our minimum ethical benchmark and qualify for Ethical Accreditation, Yardley has some issues to resolve, including its involvement in the fossil fuel industry and basic Environmental Report. If it applies for Ethical Accreditation, The Good Shopping Guide will be able to give Yardley some guidance to improve on these areas.
