Is Twix an ethical chocolate?

Twix is a chocolate brand owned by Mars Inc. The original Twix chocolate bar is commonly known for consisting of a shortbread biscuit topped with caramel and milk chocolate, but there are other variations such as salted caramel.

The Good Shopping Guide unfortunately cannot consider Twix to be a brand which sells ethical chocolate as it has one of the lowest scores in the sector and appears at the bottom of our Ethical Chocolate Ratings Table.

Where does Twix score well for ethics?

Twix receives a top score in the Nuclear Power, Fossil Fuels and Armaments categories, as it has no involvement in any of these industries.

Where does Twix need to improve its ethical score? 

The Good Shopping Guide has given Twix a bottom score for its Animal Welfare. Mars states that it is “committed to using animals appropriately and responsibly” but has been criticised for allowing cruel and deadly animal tests.

Twix also has a bottom rating for Fairtrade, as none of its products are certified by the Fairtrade Foundation or any other legitimate Fairtrade scheme.

How can Twix become an ethical chocolate brand? 

Twix’s score on our Ethical Chocolate Ratings Table is the result of a calculation of multiple ethical criteria carried out by The Good Shopping Guide. To improve its score and meet our minimum ethical criteria Twix needs to work on a wide range of issues. To start, we suggest that Twix looks to obtain Fairtrade certification for at least some of its products.
