How ethical and sustainable is Evian?

What does Evian do?
Evian’s natural mineral source was found in 1789 by a local French nobleman, this source first became a spa in 1806 and was followed by the first bottling facility in 1826. Danone acquired Evian mineral water in 2001. Evian now sells a range of bottled waters, glass water bottles, cans of sparkling water, as well as a facial mist. The brand also partnered with Virgil Abloh releasing two reusable water bottles in order to cut down on plastic pollution within the bottled water industry.
For which criteria does Evian perform poorly?
Evian received low ratings for Political Donations in our research and ratings criteria, having donated more than $79k in recent US election cycles.
Past Criticisms of Evian’s ethical record
Evian and its parent company Danone have faced several controversies surrounding misleading sustainability claims on their products’ packaging. Evian recently came under fire for its ‘carbon neutral’ label on its bottles which you can read about here.

Evian receives high marks for its responsible and clear reporting on its use of Fossil Fuels. Danone’s Integrated Annual Report 2023 provides a set of goals as well as updates on the company’s progress toward those goals.
