Kingfisher

How ethical and sustainable is Kingfisher?

Kingfisher is included in The Good Shopping Guide’s Beer, Lager & Cider Ethical Ratings Table.

We hope that Kingfisher will start acting more ethically in the future, even though it has not yet met our ethical standards. By submitting an application for Ethical Accreditation, which includes a more thorough evaluation and suggestions for ethical development, Kingfisher might boost consumer and investor confidence.

More information on the issues may be found in The Good Shopping Guide to Ethical Lager, Cider and Beer brands.

Then, in our Beer, Lager and Cider Ethical Ratings Table compare it to other brands.

What does Kingfisher do?

Kingfisher beer was launched in 1978 by the United Breweries Group in India. Kingfisher is available in cans or bottles. Kingfisher is owned by United Breweries of which 60% is owned by Heineken; this is reflected in the brand’s rating.

For which criteria does Kingfisher perform poorly?

Due to its lack of Organic and Vegan beer and issues regarding Public Record Criticisms, Kingfisher received a poor Ethical Score from The Good Shopping Guide. The brewery doesn’t provide a variety of organic or vegan beers and has been linked to poor environmental and human rights practices through its parent company, Heineken.

Past Criticisms of Kingfisher’s ethical record

Kingfisher’s ethics criticisms come from its parent company, Heineken.

Heineken received a low score on the Corporate Information Transparency Index.

Heineken came under fire for its contractor, Sider, who was said to have labour laws violations and slave-like working conditions. Click here to find out more about Sider.

In what areas does Kingfisher score well for its ethics?

Kingfisher received high grades in our categories for Nuclear Energy, Environmental Reporting, Animal Welfare, Political Donations and Armaments. Heineken’s sustainability strategy, which includes a number of long-term environmental goals, also gets high scores for the brand.

How can Kingfisher improve its Ethical Rating?

The Ethical Rating of a brand is divided into three categories by The Good Shopping Guide: the Environment, People and Animals. Find out more about how we rate.

Kingfisher could apply for Ethical Accreditation for more detailed suggestions on how to improve. If  Kingfisher offered a selection of organic or vegan beers, it might raise its ranking and adhere to our ethical standards. The business could also consider releasing a Genetic Modification Policy.
