Neutrogena

Is Neutrogena a good brand for the Environment, for Animals and for People?

Neutrogena is a skincare, hair care and health and beauty brand. Originally founded as Natone in the 1930s, these products were sold to scores that supplied Hollywood studios with their cosmetics. In 1994, Neutrogena was acquired by Johnson & Johnson.

Unfortunately, due to the unethical activity of Neutrogena’s parent corporation, Johnson & Johnson, this skincare brand has received a low Good Shopping Guide score and appears low down on our Ethical Skincare Ratings Table.

We encourage all skincare brands to keep pushing for ethical excellence, always considering the Environment, Animals and People when making business decisions and creating, sourcing and selling beauty products. Beauty is a luxury, and therefore, there is no reason why beauty brands cannot strive for better standards of sustainability and ethics.

In which categories does Neutrogena receive a top rating?

Neutrogena receives a top rating in the Nuclear Power, Fossil Fuels and Armaments. This is because neither Neutrogena nor Johnson & Johnson have been found to be directly profiting from any of these controversial industries.

In which categories does Neutrogena receive a bottom rating?

As evident by its low score, Neutrogena receives a bottom rating in many of our research categories. Notably, Neutrogena does not have any organic or vegan certified products and therefore receives a bottom rating in the Organic and Vegetarian/Vegan Verified categories.

Additionally, due to the activities of its parent company, Johnson & Johnson, Neutrogena receives a bottom rating for Irresponsible Marketing. Johnson & Johnson has been embroiled in numerous scandals and lawsuits, both in recent times and in the past few decades, for its role in marketing harmful products it claimed to be safe, such as talcum powder and prescription opioids.
