Biona

How ethical is Biona?

Biona is a brand of sweets owned by Windmill Organics Ltd which has a good score on The Good Shopping Guide’s Sweets Ratings Table.

With a high GSG score, Biona can be considered an ethical brand. Biona hasn’t yet applied for Ethical Accreditation, but its high score would mean that if it did, it would be able to display The Good Shopping Guide’s Ethical Mark on its products.

We encourage other companies in the Sweets sector to follow Biona’s example and adopt more ethical policies and practices.

What does Biona do?

Biona was one of the UK’s first Organic companies. It was originally created as an organic food shop in the 1980s by an Irish farmer who moved to London. The brand became Biona as we know it in 1992 and has been family owned ever since. Biona’s range now includes over 400 products that are sold in over 40 countries.

In which areas does Biona perform well?

Biona performs well for its Environmental Report, as it has a ‘What We Stand For’ page detailing how its products are vegetarian/vegan and organic. There is also an ‘Our Mission’ page on Biona’s website with information on the history of the brand and its commitment to reducing single-use plastic and its ethical and sustainable supply chain. In addition, Biona’s parent company, Windmill Organics, states that all of its brands are GMO free.

Overall we were very impressed with Biona’s clear ethical ethos, producing a range of sweets that are free from harmful ingredients with an emphasis on natural products, so the brand has been awarded a top rating for our Ethical Innovator criterion.

What can Biona do to improve its score?

The above benchmark score that Biona is awarded on The Good Shopping Guide’s Ethical Sweets Ratings Table is the result of an evaluation of multiple ethical criteria.

As Biona already receives a top score in the Ethical Sweets sector, The Good Shopping Guide encourages it to get in touch and apply for Ethical Accreditation. After sending in its application, Biona will be offered the use of The Good Shopping Guide Ethical Mark.
