How ethical is Bodyform?

Bodyform is a brand of period products which has a below-benchmark score on The Good Shopping Guide’s Ethical Period Products Ratings Table. Although Bodyform has not yet met our ethical benchmark, we hope to see the brand make progress in the future.

We would have extra confidence in Bodyform if it applied for Ethical Accreditation, whereby The Good Shopping Guide would make further detailed assessment and recommendations for improvement. Find out more about the issues facing the Ethical Period Products sector.

What does Bodyform do?

Bodyform is a brand of period products which is owned by Essity, and is known by different names such as Libresse, Nuvenia and Saba in different parts of the world.

In which areas does Bodyform perform poorly?

Bodyform’s products lack any Vegetarian or vegan, or Organic certification so a bottom score is given for these criteria. Bodyform is given a bottom rating for GM as Essity does use GMOs, and their use is heavily implied in Bodyform’s FAQs.

Bodyform also gets a bottom rating for Animal Welfare as Essity confirms that animal testing is used when required by law. Find out more about how we rate by exploring our ethical criteria.

Past Criticisms of Bodyform’s record

Between August  and September 2022, 145 workers at the Essity mill in Kawerau were locked out of their workplace without pay, following requests for pay increases in line with inflation and the rising cost of living in their collective employment agreement negotiations. In the previous financial year, Essity made a $1.8bn profit from its global interests, yet the Australian-based executives who run Essity’s New Zealand operations refuse to entertain an increase for the workers at Kawerau.

In which areas does Bodyform score well for its ethics?

Bodyform gets a top rating for its Environmental Report, as its Annual Sustainability Report 2021 contains a Net Zero goal as well as other targets.

We found no criticisms of Bodyform relating to; GM, Nuclear Power, Fossil Fuels, Animal Welfare, Armaments, Irresponsible Marketing or Political Donations, therefore the brand scores well for these criteria. Find out more about how we rate.

How can Bodyform improve its ethical rating?

The below-benchmark score that Bodyform is awarded with on The Good Shopping Guide’s Ethical Period Products Ratings Table is the result of an evaluation of multiple ethical criteria.

To reach our minimum ethical benchmark and qualify for Ethical Accreditation, Bodyform has some issues to resolve.  If it applies for Ethical Accreditation, The Good Shopping Guide will be able to give Bodyform some guidance to improve on these areas.
