How ethical is Quorn?

Quorn is a plant-based food brand which has a below-benchmark score on The Good Shopping Guide’s Ethical Vegan & Vegetarian Foods Ratings Table. Although Quorn has not yet met our ethical benchmark, we hope to see the brand make progress in the future.

What does Quorn do?

Quorn is a brand of meat-free ingredients and convenience foods founded in 1985 in Yorkshire. The brand was originally sold by Marlow Foods which was a joint venture between Rank Hovis McDougall and Imperial Chemical Industries who had found a way to grow and process the fungus Fusarium venenatum as a protein for human consumption.

Past Criticisms of Quorn’s record

Quorn’s parent company, Monde Nissin, received a poor score in the Food Products category of the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment which analyses economic, environmental and social performance.

In which areas does Quorn score well for its ethics?

Quorn performs well for its Environmental Report as parent company, Monde Nissin Corporation, has a Sustainability Report containing lots of targets. It also gets a top rating for GM as its Sustainability Report 2022 includes a non-GMO statement. It also scores well for Vegetarian as it is certified by The Vegan Society.
