Is the Smarties brand ethical and sustainable?

Smarties is a Nestlé chocolate brand that is listed in The Good Shopping Guide’s Ethical Chocolate Ratings Table. There are a number of different attributes that a brand must comply with in order to meet our ethical benchmark, as there is still significant room for improvement.

For which criteria does Smarties perform poorly? 

Despite Smarties ranking highly in many categories there are still some issues yet to be dealt with by the company; the availability of Organic and Fairtrade products, Animal Welfare and Public Record Criticisms.

For instance, its parent company Nestlé still permits animal testing on its products when required by law, despite ethical alternatives being available. This has resulted in a bottom rating in the Animal Welfare category.

The low rating for Public Record Criticisms and Public Record Criticisms+ (only given to companies with severe issues) is due to Nestlé’s alleged involvement in unethical practices such as deforestation, child labour, workers’ rights abuses and plastic pollution.
